How much can I put on my Road Rack? Road Racks are made of high grade 6061 T-6 billet aluminum and are designed to be very strong and durable when installed properly. With that said they are still only to be used as a means to carry small items no larger than commercially available motorcycle luggage. They should not be used to carry items heavier than would normally be packed as personal items such as clothing and sundry items in motorcycle luggage.
Do I need to protect the chrome finish when using my motorcycle luggage? Yes, please be sure to place a clean, soft cloth, a chamois or one of our custom made covers between the luggage rack and your gear. The chrome finish will scratch like any other chrome part on your motorcycle. We sell covers for this purpose or you can use any clean, soft cloth or chamois to protect the finish. The Black Wrinkle Finish is much more durable and in many cases does not need to be protected. Use good judgment. Loads typically shift a little while you’re riding and if you place a sharp or hard surface directly on the top plate it might get scratched. However most motorcycle luggage will not cause a problem and you don’t need to worry about any protective layer. If you are using some of the new luggage systems with bottom wheels or your luggage has rivets or buckles on the bottom and you are concerned about scratches then you should probably do something to protect the rack top plate.
